The Mother of Higher Education in Somalia

History

A Legacy of Public Higher Education in Somalia

Somali National University has a long and important history in the development of higher education in Somalia. As the country’s only public higher education institution, the university has contributed to Somalia’s political, scientific, technological, economic, social, and human development for many decades.

The roots of Somali National University go back to the early institutions established during and after the independence period. These institutions provided higher learning in areas such as politics, administration, law, economics, and social sciences. Over time, these academic foundations developed into what became Somali National University in 1969.

Before Somali National University became a full national university, several higher institutes played an important role in preparing Somalia’s first generation of educated professionals.

A Period of Interruption

In 1991, Somalia faced a severe political crisis that led to the collapse of many government institutions, including Somali National University. This period disrupted higher education and caused major damage to the university’s academic and physical infrastructure.

For more than two decades, the university was unable to function as it had before. However, its historical importance remained strong in the memory of the Somali people, especially among former students, lecturers, public servants, and national leaders who had passed through its academic system.

Reopening and National Renewal

After years of instability, Somali National University began a new chapter. The reopening of the university was approved by the Cabinet on 26 November 2013, and the university officially reopened on 16 August 2014. This marked a major step toward restoring public higher education in Somalia.

The reopening of SNU was not only the return of an academic institution. It was also a symbol of national recovery, resilience, and hope. Since then, the university has worked to rebuild its campuses, restore academic programs, expand faculties, and provide affordable public higher education to Somali students.
