Faculty of Languages
About The Faculty
The Faculty of Languages at Somali National University (SNU) is dedicated to promoting excellence in language education, linguistic research, and intercultural communication. As one of the University’s prominent academic faculties, it equips students with the linguistic knowledge, communication skills, and cultural understanding needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected and globalized world.
Originally established as part of Somali National University, the Faculty was re-established in 2022 after more than three decades of inactivity following the disruption caused by the civil war. Its revival reflects the University’s commitment to strengthening language education and producing graduates capable of supporting national development, education, diplomacy, translation, media, and international cooperation.
The Faculty serves as an important academic hub that supports not only its own students but also the wider University community by enhancing language proficiency across different disciplines. It contributes to improving communication skills, academic writing, research, and professional language competence for students, academic staff, and professionals.
In response to national priorities and available academic resources, the Faculty initially relaunched with three major language programs that address Somalia’s educational and workforce needs: English, Arabic, and Somali. These programs are delivered through the Faculty’s traditional academic departments while incorporating modern teaching methods and contemporary linguistic studies.
The Faculty remains committed to expanding its academic offerings, strengthening research in language and linguistics, preserving Somalia’s linguistic heritage, and fostering multilingual competence that enables graduates to succeed in education, government, media, international organizations, and the private sector.
