About The Faculty
The Faculty of Social Sciences at Somali National University (SNU) is committed to advancing knowledge, critical thinking, and professional excellence in the social sciences. Established in 2020, the Faculty was created to address Somalia’s growing need for qualified professionals capable of contributing to national development, good governance, social cohesion, and evidence-based policymaking.
The Faculty provides a dynamic academic environment that combines high-quality teaching, research, and community engagement. Through innovative learning approaches and practical experience, students develop analytical, communication, leadership, and research skills needed to understand and address contemporary social, political, and economic challenges.
Supported by a team of highly qualified and experienced academic staff, the Faculty is dedicated to producing graduates who uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and public service. The curriculum emphasizes critical inquiry, ethical leadership, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the practical application of social science knowledge to real-world issues.
The Faculty currently offers undergraduate degree programs in Journalism, Political Science, Sociology, and Social Work. These programs prepare graduates for careers in government institutions, media organizations, civil society, international organizations, research institutions, and the private sector.
As one of the rapidly growing faculties at Somali National University, the Faculty of Social Sciences continues to strengthen its academic programs, expand research initiatives, and build partnerships that contribute to sustainable development and the advancement of social sciences in Somalia and beyond.
Programs
Department of Journalism & Communication
The Department of Journalism & Communication was originally established in 1979 and was re-established in 2019 following the reopening of Somali National University. The department is dedicated to developing competent media and communication professionals equipped with the knowledge, practical skills, and ethical standards required in today's rapidly evolving media landscape. The program combines theoretical foundations with hands-on training in journalism, digital media, broadcasting, public relations, strategic communication, and media production. Students gain practical experience in news writing, reporting, editing, multimedia storytelling, and media ethics, preparing them for careers in print, broadcast, online media, government communication, and corporate communications.
Department of Political Science
Established in 2020, the Department of Political Science provides students with a comprehensive understanding of political systems, governance, public policy, international relations, and political theory. The program equips students with the analytical and leadership skills needed to understand complex political issues and contribute to democratic governance, peacebuilding, and sustainable development. Graduates are prepared for careers in public administration, diplomacy, policy analysis, research, international organizations, civil society, and government institutions, where they can play an active role in shaping Somalia's political and institutional development.
Department of Sociology & Social Work
The Department of Sociology & Social Work, established in 2020, focuses on understanding society, human behavior, social institutions, and community development. The program prepares students to analyze social challenges and design effective interventions that improve the well-being of individuals, families, and communities. Students study subjects such as sociology, social work practice, social policy, community development, social research, counseling, and human rights. Through academic learning and fieldwork, graduates develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to promote social justice, advocate for vulnerable populations, and contribute to sustainable community development. Graduates pursue careers in social services, humanitarian organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government agencies, research institutions, community development programs, and international organizations dedicated to improving social welfare and human development.
