Faculty of Education

About The Faculty

The Faculty of Education is one of the oldest and most distinguished faculties of Somali National University (SNU). Originally established in 1963 as the Lafoole College of Education, it was founded as the National Teacher Education Center with an initial enrollment of 60 students. Since its inception, the Faculty has played a pivotal role in preparing qualified teachers and education professionals who have contributed significantly to the development of Somalia’s education sector.

During its early years, the College offered a four-year teacher education program. In the 1970s, the program was temporarily shortened to two years to address the increasing national demand for trained teachers. In 1983, the four-year degree program was reinstated with a revised curriculum that integrated academic study with supervised teaching practice and professional development.

Until 1991, the Faculty served as Somalia’s premier institution for teacher education, producing thousands of graduates who worked across the country’s primary, secondary, and higher education institutions. Following the outbreak of the civil war, the Faculty suspended its academic activities for more than two decades.

In 2014, the Faculty was re-established as part of the reopening of Somali National University, reaffirming its commitment to excellence in teacher education. Since then, it has continued to expand its academic programs to meet the evolving needs of Somalia’s education system. The Faculty combines academic excellence, pedagogical training, educational research, and practical teaching experience to prepare competent, ethical, and innovative educators.

Today, the Faculty remains dedicated to producing highly qualified teachers, educational leaders, and professionals who contribute to improving the quality of education, promoting lifelong learning, and supporting national development.
